The Kenya Rural Roads Authority has issued a traffic alert after Kamusino Bridge along River Kerio overflowed due to heavy rainfall.
Motorists have been warned not to use the bridge under any circumstances and advised to use the Kolowa–Tot route instead. Authorities said the bridge became impassable after river levels rose following ongoing heavy rains.
In a public notice issued on March 23, 2026, the authority said the bridge, located along the C582 Kolowa–Ngolon–Kamusino road near the West Pokot border, had become impassable after the river burst its banks.
“KeRRA notifies the public that Kamusino Bridge on the C582 Kolowa - Ngolon - Kamusino (Tiaty Constituency, West Pokot border) has overflowed its banks,” the authority said in the notice.
The authority said the flooding was caused by heavy rainfall currently being experienced in different parts of the country, which has led to rising river levels and flooding in some areas.
“This has been caused by the heavy rainfall currently affecting different parts of the country,” the authority said.
Motorists have been warned not to attempt to use the bridge under any circumstances until the authority confirms it is safe to do so.
“Motorists are advised not to use the bridge under any circumstances until the Authority issues an official update,” the authority said.
The Kenya Rural Roads Authority also advised motorists who normally use the route to use an alternative road until further notice.
“Motorists using this route are advised to use the Kolowa–Tot Route until further notice,” the authority said.
The authority said it would continue monitoring the situation and provide updates through its official communication channels.
It also encouraged members of the public to regularly check its official social media pages for updates on the situation and road accessibility.
“KeRRA encourages the public to consistently check our official social media pages for updates. Our regional offices countrywide are available for assistance. Please drive safely and follow all advisories,” the notice said.
Flooding of bridges and roads is common in some parts of Kenya during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in areas near rivers and seasonal waterways.
Rising water levels can make bridges unsafe for vehicles and pedestrians, leading authorities to temporarily close roads to prevent accidents and protect motorists.
The closure of Kamusino Bridge is expected to affect transport and movement in the area, especially for motorists and residents who rely on the Kolowa–Ngolon–Kamusino road for travel and transport of goods.
The Kolowa–Tot route has been designated as the main alternative route for motorists until the water levels reduce and the bridge is declared safe for use again.
Authorities have urged motorists to follow traffic advisories and avoid flooded roads and bridges, as crossing flooded sections can be dangerous due to strong water currents and reduced visibility of road surfaces.
The Kenya Rural Roads Authority is expected to continue monitoring the bridge and river levels before issuing further updates on when the bridge will be reopened for public use.
The authority has also reminded motorists and the public to prioritise safety during the ongoing rainy season and to follow all official traffic advisories issued by road authorities and local administrators.
